Judging Criteria
There are a lot of very talented vidders out there and we're hoping to see what they feel is their best work from the past year, so our standards will be extremely high. In order to be considered for any of the category awards, a vid must demonstrate extraordinary skill in the following areas:
Narrative: What the vid is saying and how well it says it. The strongest narratives will be considered for Achievement in Vidding but clear and impactful narratives will be rewarded regardless of category.
Musicality: How well the visuals match the song. We're looking for nuanced and subtle connections as well as more dramatic ones. The strongest vids in this area will be considered for Achievement in Use of Music, but all vids regardless of category should look like the music.
Pacing: The overall flow of the vid. When done well, this increases the impact of the narrative and the connection to the music. All winning vids will show a strong sense of instincts for pacing.
Technical editing: How well the vidder uses the software to create his or her vision. This includes knowledge and use of effects that work with the overall concept and aid the narrative. It also includes the vidder's ability to judge when effects are unnecessary or gratuitous.
Judging Process
Stage One: The two judges will watch the vids independently and each judge will choose 10* top contenders in each of the three categories.
Stage Two: The two judges will compare notes and discuss the vids, and agree on the top six* vids in each category.
Stage Three: The judges will work together to choose one* top vid overall in each of the three categories, and the remaining five* will be shortlisted.
Stage Four: Each judge will choose a vid for an Honorary Award. This can be any vid premiered in 2007, whether or not it was submitted for award consideration.
Stage Five: Decisions will be announced and each of the winning/shortlisted vids will receive awards and reviews.
*This figure is an estimate only and may vary in each category, subject to judges' discretion.
Fandoms
While we accept entries for all fandoms and sources, please refer to the rules for an explanation of how the judges' knowledge of source could affect judging.
Please note that there are some fandoms with which only one judge is familiar. As judges will engage in significant discussion and collaborative judging, we consider that there will be no material difference between entering a vid whose fandom is known by both judges, or one whose fandom is only known by one judge.
This is a non-exhaustive list and does not contain animes, most movies, and a number of shows that are old/obscure/sitcom-based/of which we only have partial knowledge. Please contact us if you are in doubt.
